5-Part Series on How to Start a Food Blog on WordPress

Have you been dreaming about starting a food blog? Do you get overwhelmed by the idea of building and launching a website?

You’re not alone! Many food bloggers find the idea of starting a blog daunting. Instead, they opt to build up their presence on social media platforms like Pinterest, Tiktok or Instagram.

And while those services are a great way to develop brand awareness (and get a quick hit of dopamine), they shouldn’t be the basis of your business.

Why You Need a Blog

Having a blog is like owning a home. You get to control the design, size and décor. When visitors come, it’s you that they’re coming to see. Not you and 8 million other roommates.

Social media, by contrast, is like renting a tiny, tiny little closet. Visitors come to the city and maybe… just maybe… end up in the neighborhood where your closet is packed in with other closets.

Giving visitors directions to get to your rented closet is hard. You don’t even really understand how to get there yourself. And, if you’re lucky enough to figure it out… well, the city changes the layout and you’re back to square one again.

With a blog, visitors can find you in different ways. Maybe you’re thoughtful when you start, leaving a path for visitors to find you (hint: this is called good SEO). Other visitors can share your address or social media users can click through to you. Once they’re there, visitors can sign up to hear from you – direct from you to them in their inbox.

Don’t get me wrong, social media is great. It’s an excellent tool for building up brand awareness, but it’s a tough place to get concentrated attention or to build a revenue stream.

In this series, I’ll teach you how to start a food blog, starting with the basic structure and then moving into specifics. For reasons that you’ll discover in Part 2, I recommend building your blog using WordPress.org through a domain registrar and website host, like GoDaddy’s Managed WordPress.

But before we jump into buying a service, we’ll talk about what it means to start a food blog. In Part 1, Setting Expectations, I’ll answer those questions that new bloggers have, but can’t really seem to find a straight answer for. Questions like:

  • How much time does a food blog take,
  • How much does it cost to start a food blog, and
  • How do food bloggers make money

Parts 3, 4 and 5 will dive into how to use WordPress, including a tour of the WordPress dashboard, selecting a WordPress theme, building out pages and posts, creating menus and adding plugins.

If you’re interested in starting a food blog but don’t know where to start, this series is for you!
